ABOUT US
Who We Are
Ometochtli Mexican Folk Dance is a Mexican Folk and Aztec dance group dedicated to celebrating and preserving Mexican traditions through movement, music, and cultural education. Rooted in community, we welcome anyone interested in Mexican culture—with or without prior dance experience.
Founded and directed by Alejandra Jiménez, Ometochtli Mexican Folk Dance is committed to preserving and promoting Mexican heritage through Aztec dance, traditional folk dance, and cultural education. We create meaningful spaces where history, art, and community converge, fostering deeper understanding of cultural identity across generations.
We offer affordable classes for children, youth, and adults, designed to support individual growth while encouraging collective achievement. At Ometochtli, each dancer is supported in reaching personal goals while working together to honor shared group objectives. Our environment is inclusive, respectful, and welcoming.
The group collaborates with other dance organizations and institutions to promote art and culture, and is proud to be part of the Mexican Folk Art Collective, a network of artisans and artists from Mexico living in Mexico and the USA.
Whether you want to dance, learn, or connect with culture, Ometochtli invites you to join our community.
The Meaning of Ometochtli
Ometochtli is a Nahuatl word meaning “Two Rabbits.”
- Ome = two or duality
- Tochtli = rabbit
In Nahua culture, the rabbit symbolizes fertility, vitality, joy, celebration, and abundance. For our organization, Ometochtli represents balance and purpose. Ome reflects the duality we seek in daily life—balance between past and present, tradition and education, body and spirit. The rabbits symbolize the seeds of cultural knowledge we plant in children, who carry it forward to future generations.
Ometochtli is not just a dance group; it is a living bridge between ancestors and future generations, rooted in culture, education, and community.
Mission
To celebrate, share, and preserve Mexican culture by bringing people together through the beauty and power of traditional Mexican dance. This mission nurtures cultural pride and identity among Mexican children, youth, and adults, while building bridges of understanding across cultures. By honoring our roots and sharing them with others, we inspire social responsibility, mutual respect, and a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity within our communities.
Vision
Our vision is a vibrant and inclusive community where Mexican culture is honored, lived, and shared across generations and cultures. Through traditional Mexican dance, we envision children, youth, and adults growing with pride in their cultural identity, confidence in who they are, and respect for others. We aspire to be a cultural bridge by fostering deep cross-cultural understanding through the joy, discipline, and storytelling of dance.
